Food historians generally agree that recipes called "brownies"were first introduced in the beginning of the 20th century. This coincides with the mass production of chocolate and cocoa.
Blonde brownies or "blondies" predated brownies according to old cookbooks. The primary ingredients of blondies- molasses, butter, and brown sugar- are also the main components of butterscotch, a candy that was very popular during the mid 19th century. Some 19th century cookbooks contain recipes that combined traditional butterscotch ingredients with flour. This would have produced an early version of today's "Blondie."
